After wasting an excellent debut from southpaw starter Payton Tolle (5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) in a frustrating 4-2 loss to the Pirates on Friday night, the Red Sox turn to Dustin May to lead them to a rebound victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Boston bats will hope to get rolling against right-hander Johan Oviedo, who owns a 3.60 ERA over three starts after missing the majority of the campaign with a lat injury and the entire previous season due to Tommy John surgery during the ’23-24 offseason.
In six games following their 12-1 win at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 23, the Red Sox are 4-2, but averaging 3.2 runs scored and 3.0 runs allowed per game.
The Red Sox activated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, who is 8 for 27 (.296) with two doubles, a home run, five runs and seven RBI in nine games since signing with Boston earlier this month, from the Paternity List and optioned Nick Sogard back to Triple-A. Lowe, however, is not in Saturday’s starting lineup.
