ICE grabs Haitian illegal immigrant charged in sex crime after arraignment in Boston court
A Haitian national charged with a sex crime is under arrest by ICE after a detainer against him was ignored, immigration officials said in a direct hit against sanctuary city policies.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they have taken Jean Yves Yves Ovilme, 37, into custody after he was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court on Nov. 20 on two charges: indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older and assault and battery.
The Herald has requested further details from the Suffolk DA’s office, which has no record of Ovilme in their system. However, ICE states that “Massachusetts ignored the immigration detainer and released Ovilme on Jan. 3.” Boston’s Enforcement Removal Operations arrested him last week.
“Mr. Ovilme will have his day in court, but he stands accused of horribly victimizing a Massachusetts resident,” said ICE Boston ERO acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde. “Mr. Ovilme posed a significant danger to our Massachusetts neighborhoods, and we will not tolerate such threats to our New England community. ICE Boston will continue our mission of arresting and removing illegal alien offenders.”
Ovilme legally entered the U.S. on Nov. 10, 2023, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but he “later violated the terms of his lawful admission,” ICE said in a statement Monday. They did not say how he made it all the way to Boston.
This all comes as Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu is being called before Congress Feb. 11 to answer questions about sanctuary policies. She has not said yet if she will go.
The U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sent the invitation to testify to Wu, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston.
U.S. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., chair of the GOP-controlled committee, informed the mayors of an ongoing investigation into “sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States and their impact on public safety and the effectiveness of federal efforts to enforce the immigration laws.”
Comer requested “documents and information related to the sanctuary policies of” all four cities and invited each mayor to testify at a public hearing.
