3-alarm fire devastates apartment building in Lowell’s Centralville neighborhood
LOWELL — Firefighters were at the scene of a three-alarm blaze in Centralville on Saturday night, battling flames that ravaged a three-story apartment building.
No injuries were reported due to the fire at 30/32 Ennell St. Its cause remains under investigation.
Initial reports of the fire came in at about 9:30 p.m. Shortly after, at approximately 9:40 p.m., a second alarm was sounded. While there were indications that the flames might be under control, a third alarm was struck at around 10 p.m., signaling the intensity of the blaze.
Once the fire was under control, Deputy Fire Chief Peter Gallagher reported that all residents in the building’s six units were displaced due to the damage done to the structure. He expressed relief that no one was injured and noted that while the third floor sustained the most significant damage, the entire structure was affected.
“The second and third floor will have to be completely gutted and redone,” Gallagher said. “Not enough damage to rip it down though.”
The Lowell Fire Department’s Ladder 4, which was added to the fleet last year, played a crucial role on the scene. Its 100-foot steel aerial ladder was instrumental in providing access to the building’s roof.
By midnight, the last of the emergency crews were clearing the scene.
